The revolutionary, patent-pending Drivelock design, uses a Hodge Defense-designed extrusion with three independent wedges that interface with the angular grooves in a proprietary barrel nut. This system clamps the rail onto the steel barrel nut with extreme force and precision, while also driving the handguard rearward towards the upper receiver. The slightly larger ID of that extrusion gives more real estate around the gas block, even more rigidity than the M76, and takes longer to heat.
SOLGW is not discontinuing the M76. That will remain in full production. They are just adding the M89 to the lineup.

This is the third M89 handguard I’ve purchased. I have the 13, 15, and now the 16.75” versions. This is a stout handguard. All three that I have are sitting on guns that are setup for longer range work with LPVOs in Quantified Performance style matches. That’s just to say that these get a lot of hard use coming on and off various barricades, supports, and props.
What I like: starting with the barrel nut which is pretty easy to instal, comes with the tool, and it’s beefy. The handguard body is an ideal diameter. It’s wide enough that it keeps accessories away from the barrel and gas block, but not so wide that it’ll be thicker than most suppressors. It gives a good surface to put on bags and supports and be stable. For as sturdy as it is, it’s still fairly lightweight. I like that it has ant-rotation tabs built in at the receiver end, and also includes a pin should you want additional security. I have not used the pins and have had zero issues with shift.
For the mounting cross bolts, SOLGW says just tighten until they stop. I didn’t really have a definitive “stop” on any of the rails I mounted. So, I opted for a dab of thread locker and used a torque driver to make sure they were all evenly tight at 45 in-lb. I haven’t experienced any loosening or issues with any of them using that method.
My one issue with these rail systems is that the barrel nut is so beefy, it makes contact with the gas tube and puts tension on it. I ended up ordering a more custom, high end gas tube to help with this. It was a little frustrating to have to do trial and error on gas tubes to see if they’d work.
They are a little pricey compared to a lot of the common options in the $180-$220 range, but what you get is something solid and ready for hard use. I also hear that SOLGW and BTO give awesome customer service, so there’s peace of mind in the price too.
Overall, this is an excellent option and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this.

Great option at 13.75 for a 14.5 barrel setup. Solid lockup via the drive lock system and a typical SOLGW quality.

SOLGW’s flagship rail does not disappoint! It’s a little larger diameter than the Wedgelock, but the Drivelock is simpler, easier to install, and incredibly rigid. The larger diameter helps more with heat dissipation and less interference with MLOK attachments near the gas block. This handguard is a definite win in AR rail world.
