Built from a MIL-SPEC foundation with HP/MPI-tested and certified bolt and M16-style bolt carrier group with mid-length gas system and H buffer, the TAC3 performs reliably. Superior accuracy and performance come from the company’s signature chrome-lined, cold hammer-forged barrel made from FN proprietary steel, fully free-floated within a Hodge Defense-designed wedge lock handguard. The rigid handguard, affixed with a proprietary barrel nut and anti-rotation technology, provides continues 12 o’clock rail space and multiple M-LOK attachment points for lights, lasers and other accessories while minimizing deflection during hard use. Outfitted with ambidextrous charging handle and selector, and FN’s custom 6-position buttstock, pistol grip and magazine, the FN 15 TAC3 is a streamlined, rugged carbine ready for any situation.

FN’s Tac3 shoots well and has appealing features, like the Wedge Lock handguard and ambidextrous parts. The grey Cerakote is beautiful and has a pleasant texture compared to most anodizing.
The rifle uses a THRiL magazine and furniture, forgoing the usual Magpul parts of the Tactical II, seemingly for the sake of being FN branded.
-The magazine is fine, but as of writing this to my knowledge, the only way to get one is by buying a Tac3, since the FN version is textured differently from the standard THRiL offering. Without being able to reasonably amass them for testing or duty use, what is the point?
-The grip has a modern, more vertical angle and is comfortable enough.
-The stock uses an unintuitive shifter mechanism; one pushes the shifter to the back for adjustment, which is supposed to make extension natural. In practice, the shifter is stiff and vague making extension feel less natural than other mechanisms. Collapsing the stock is counter intuitive, requiring pressing the shifter back while pulling the stock.
I am replacing them with Magpul, anyway.
For the price, the rifle has a couple of missed opportunities.
The first is the “government” profile barrel. The slightly-later-released FN DMR3 uses their “hybrid” profile, and I wish that it had been included here.
The second is the basic mil-spec trigger. More interesting, still cost effective options exist.
I like the rifle, but I think that it could have been more appealing in an already-dense market.
