  • Description

The Steiner DBAL-D2 features an infrared LED illuminator and two laser aiming devices all in one integrated, rail-mounted platform.

The infrared (IR) illuminator is adjustable from 2° to 30° with a simple twist, meaning that flooding large close-in areas or concentrating the IR illumination beam on a target that’s further away takes only a few seconds. Even better, the adjustable power settings on the illuminator allow you to conserve battery life and tailor your setup to ensure the right amount of illumination is available at the touch of the activation switch.

The DBAL-D2’s visible and IR laser pointers are co-aligned; among other things, one major advantage of this is that zeroing the D2 is easily achievable during the daylight hours by simply zeroing the visible laser – once the visible laser is zeroed, the IR laser is zeroed as well. And, if the platform already has a zeroed optic, the zeroing procedure for the visible laser can be as easy as moving the laser aiming point to the location of the zeroed reticle on target.

Switching with the DBAL-D2 is evolved – the activation switch (or included remote pressure pad) can be quickly set to fire the visible laser (high and low settings), the IR laser, the IR illuminator, or both the IR illuminator and laser together (high and low settings). Integrated switching for the laser and illuminator means that there are no separate actions required to both illuminate and identify a target and locate the platform’s point of aim; under low- or no-light conditions, reducing the complexity of operation is critical.

For a variety of different applications, the DBAL-D2 provides an excellent platform for daylight and nighttime hunting and operations.

Illumination is fantastic and even better with aftermarket filter caps. Which is good because the poorly designed ir and laser cover both ripped off within a few weeks of use. I ran a 1.93 lpvo mount while using the d2, and still saw a decent chunk of it through my optic any time I wasn’t on 4x+. I upgraded from the d2 when the opportunity was there, but would buy again if I was in the market.

I’m extremely happy with the DBAL overall. Under nods the laser and illuminator give you the right amount of power for different situations. Its not super easy to switch settings on the fly but the contour of the knob and order of the settings have worked well for me under nods with or without gloves. So far I have used it anywhere from 5 yards to 100 yards away and the power settings/adjustment of the illuminator worked very well on both ends of the spectrum. As others have mentioned its massive. Like having a shoe box mounted on the end of a rifle. I made it work with my WML using a surefire m-lok, cam-pin style mount so I can still mount the light at 9 o’clock and adjust its position slightly to clear the DBAL. One thing I definitely like is that there is no indicator light constantly on like the MAWL. It’s another input I don’t want in my sight picture or being seen by opfor.

The LED IR illuminator is leaps and bounds better than nearly every civilian versioned laser illuminator due to the BS power restrictions on sales to the civilian market. The MAWL C1+ is the only comparable laser illuminator available to civilians, and the visible and IR laser pointers between the D2 and MAWL are also comparable to each other.

The D2 doesn’t have a well positioned and ergonomic controls like the MAWL, so you’ll have to consider the added cost of a decent pressure pad since the included one leaves much to be desired. The MAWL is priced significantly higher though, so you’ll likely still come out ahead dollars wise with the D2.

The most annoying thing about the D2 is its chunkiness. The LED emitter can get in the way and adds a significant protrusion to your rifle. It also prevents it from being used on a Unity Tactical hub mount, which usually makes for a nice mounting system for adding a white light.

One of the very few usable IR illuminators on the civilian market. Has all the things you need for NV while you save up for the MAWL you really want.
