Episode Overview- Intrepid Care: A Beacon of Support for Veterans

Mike Barker, an eight-year Army veteran and former combat medic, founded Intrepid Care in November 2022. The organization’s name pays homage to the Center for the Intrepid, where Mike worked for 14 years rehabilitating critically wounded service members. Intrepid Care’s mission is to provide programs for veterans, service members, first responders, and their families, focusing on sports, outdoors, and recreational activities.

What sets Intrepid Care apart is its inclusive approach. Mike emphasized that the organization serves all veterans, regardless of their deployment status or combat experience. This inclusivity addresses a gap in veteran support services, catering to those who may not qualify for other programs but still need assistance.

The Power of Outdoor Adventures

Throughout the podcast, Mike shared stories of how outdoor activities, particularly hunting, have become a powerful tool for connecting with veterans and breaking down barriers. He recounted his first turkey hunt experience at age 35, which sparked his passion for introducing other veterans to hunting.

These outdoor experiences serve multiple purposes, time spent in hunting blinds allows veterans to open up and share their struggles in a comfortable, non-threatening environment. Activities like the annual dog and knife hunt offer veterans an opportunity to experience controlled excitement, reminiscent of their service days but in a safe setting. Building camaraderie by  shared experiences in nature help foster bonds between veterans and create a support network. Offering new skills and challenges from bow hunting to thermal coyote hunts, these activities give veterans new goals to pursue and skills to master. Thesw all go beyond the outdoors to offer Veterans more comprehensive support.

As Intrepid Care continues to grow and expand its reach, it stands as a testament to the power of community, the healing potential of outdoor activities, and the ongoing need to support our veterans long after their service has ended.
